A chest radiograph performed following lumpectomy (A) shows a surgical sponge in the right lateral chest (arrows). This finding was overlooked. Two weeks later, the patient presented with a breast abscess. Image B is a mammogram and shows the surgical sponge (arrows), surrounding soft tissue abscess (arrowheads), and gas pockets in the abscess (dashed arrow).
