Fracture of 7th cervical vertebra in a patient with ankylosing spondylitis visualized by CT and MRI but not plain radiographs

Fracture of 7th cervical vertebra in a patient with ankylosing spondylitis visualized by CT and MRI but not plain radiographs
Cervical fracture (7th cervical vertrebra) in a patient with advanced ankylosing spondylitis. The fracture is a complete segment fracture (unstable fracture), extending from the ventral to the dorsal parts of the spine. Bone marrow edema due to the fracture and fracture lines are seen on MRI, while bone destruction is seen more clearly on CT. Arrows indicate the ventral borders of the fracture. The fracture is not seen on the two plain radiographs partly because of overlapping structures.
CT: computed tomography; MRI: magnetic resonance imaging.
