Immobile arm in children with neurologic deficits

Immobile arm in children with neurologic deficits

CNS: central nervous system.

* Erb palsy (C5 and C6 injury with upper arm adduction, forearm extension, and preserved wrist and hand function) is the most common bracheal plexus injury occurring during birth. Refer to UpToDate topics on neonatal brachial plexus palsies.

¶ Acute flaccid myelitis can often have a history of upper respiratory infection with fever followed after several days by weakness with hypotonia affecting one or more extremities. Less commonly, patients may have cranial nerve dysfunction, bowel or bladder dysfunction, and/or sensory abnormalities.

Δ In some patients with rapid return of normal function, the diagnosis of Todd paralysis may be made without neuroimaging, especially those with a history of prior episodes.
