Normal anagen hair and loose anagen syndrome hair

(A) Normal anagen hairs have pigmented, distorted bulbs and an attached root sheath.
(B) Hairs shed from the scalp in patients with loose anagen syndrome have a ruffled cuticle and lack an attached root sheath.
