Schematic model of the natural course and outcome of acute liver failure in children
The clinical trajectory of a child with acute liver failure is dynamic and difficult to predict. The clinical presentation may occur anywhere along the continuum. Liver transplant (arrows) interrupts the natural history. Improved assessment and estimate of the clinical trajectory will enhance transplant decisions in the future.
SIRS: systemic inflammatory response syndrome.
