Bone marrow aspirate smear from a patient with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL)

Most of the cells are abnormal promyelocytes with folded, bi-lobed, dumbbell or reniform-shaped nuclei with abundant granular cytoplasm. Sometimes the granules can obscure the details of the nucleus.
