Starling resistor model of the upper airway

Starling resistor model of the upper airway
The tendency of the upper airway to collapse is determined by its critical closing pressure, designated as Pcrit. When Pcrit is below tracheal pressure (PDS), airway is open without airflow limitation. When Pcrit is greater than tracheal pressure (PDS) but less than nasal pressure (PUS), there is partial airway collapse with maximal inspiratory airflow limitation. When Pcrit is above nasal pressure (PUS), there is complete obstructive apnea.
RUS: upstream resistance; PUS: upstream pressure; RDS: downstream resistance; PDS: downstream pressure.
