The MHC class I antigen processing and presentation pathway

The MHC class I antigen processing and presentation pathway
Proteins from cytoplasmic pathogens and cellular proteins are targeted to the proteasome for proteolysis. Some of the resulting peptide products are selected by the TAP complex for import into the ER, where they can be sampled by newly synthesized MHC class I molecules. Class I heavy chains assemble with beta-2-microglobulin and are retained in association with the TAP complex via the chaperone tapasin to facilitate peptide encounter. Assembled MHC I molecules with bound peptide are then exported through the secretory pathway to the cell surface.
MHC: major histocompatibility complex; ER: endoplasmic reticulum; B2M: beta-2-microglobulin; TAP: transporter associated with antigen processing.
