Immunoglobulin heavy chain gene rearrangement

Immunoglobulin heavy chain gene rearrangement

Heavy chain rearrangement is a stepwise process.

(1) Specific D and J segments are joined (D3-J5) and bridging DNA strand is excised.

(2) A second rearrangement occurs between V and DJ segments (see V3-D3J5).

(3) The rearranged DNA strand is transcribed into mRNA after splicing out of additional redundant V and J regions.
L: light chain gene segment; VH: variable region of heavy chain; D: diversity; JH: joining segment of heavy chain; Cµ: constant region of immunoglobulin M (IgM) heavy chain; mRNA: messenger ribonucleic acid; DNA: deoxyribonucleic acid.
