Minimal requirements for early hospital discharge or outpatient therapy of deep venous thrombosis
All of the following conditions must apply:
Hemodynamic stability and stable clinical status
Low risk of bleeding
Severe kidney function impairment is not present
Sufficient home support (eg, reliable access to outpatient medications, good living conditions, caregiver support, phone access) for:
  • Anticoagulant therapy and
  • Surveillance for DVT and bleeding complications
This table describes the criteria for outpatient anticoagulation in patients with DVT. Indications for inpatient treatment include massive DVT (eg, iliofemoral DVT, phlegmasia), high risk of bleeding on anticoagulant therapy, and comorbid conditions including concurrent pulmonary embolism.
DVT: deep venous thrombosis.
