Treatment options for chancroid

Drugs of choice

Azithromycin 1 g orally in a single dose OR

Ceftriaxone 250 mg IM in a single dose

Alternatives

Ciprofloxacin* 500 mg orally twice daily for three days OR

Erythromycin^¶ base 500 mg orally three times daily for seven days

IM: intramuscular.
* Not recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding.
¶ Erythromycin is rarely used given gastrointestinal toxicity. Erythromycin ethylsuccinate 800 mg may be substituted for erythromycin base 500 mg.
