Defined elevated blood lead levels
Prior to 1971 ≥60 mcg/dL (2.88 micromol/L)
1972-1975 ≥40 mcg/dL (1.93 micromol/L)
1975-1985 ≥30 mcg/dL (1.45 micromol/L)
1985-1991 ≥25 mcg/dL (1.20 micromol/L)
1991-2010 ≥10 mcg/dL (0.48 micromol/L)
2010-2021 ≥5 mcg/dL (0.24 micromol/L)
2021-present ≥3.5 mcg/dL (0.17 micromol/L
No safe or "nontoxic" blood level exists. Between 1970 and 2012, the blood lead level defined for specific action by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention gradually decreased from 60 mcg/dL (2.9 micromol/L) to 10 mcg/dL (0.48 micromol/L). In 2012, a reference level was established at the 97.5th percentile of blood lead levels for children in the United States (5 mcg/dL [0.24 micromol/L]).
