Focal nodular hyperplasia of the liver on ultrasound and MRI

Focal nodular hyperplasia of the liver on ultrasound and MRI

Greyscale ultrasound image in a patient with focal nodular hyperplasia shows slightly hyperechoic liver lesion (A, arrow). The color Doppler image shows "spoke-wheel" pattern of branching vessels (B, arrowhead).

T2-weighted MRI demonstrates focal nodular hyperplasia with mild hyperintensity compared with surrounding liver. The central scar is hyperintense (C, dashed arrow); T1-weighted precontrast image shows lesion is isointense to surrounding parenchyma and the scar is hypointense (D, thick arrow).

Hepatic arterial phase MRI demonstrates hyperenhancing mass with hypointense scar (E and F, short arrows).
MRI: magnetic resonance imaging.
