Lumbar vertebrae in ankylosing spondylitis

Lumbar vertebrae in ankylosing spondylitis
Radiographs of lumbar vertebrae showing progressive disease in ankylosing spondylitis. The radiograph from 1940 (left panel) reveals "shiny corners" (arrows) at anterior T11 and L2 vertebral bodies, an early sign of ankylosing spondylitis. A comparison of radiographs from 1940 and 1950 (right panel) also reveals progressive squaring of lumbar vertebrae. The 1950 radiograph demonstrates early development of a "bamboo" spine. These images are of suboptimal contrast. If digital images were available, it would be advisable to use appropriate software to adjust the contrast and perhaps magnify the areas of interest.
