Steps to safely swaddle a baby

Steps to safely swaddle a baby
Swaddling a baby can help stop crying or fussing. To swaddle a baby:
  1. Put the baby on a large blanket that has the top corner folded down (A).
  2. Bring the left arm down (B). Wrap the cloth over the arm and chest, and tuck it under the right side of the baby (C).
  3. Bring the right arm down. Wrap the cloth over the baby's arm and chest, and tuck it under the left side of the baby (D).
  4. Twist or fold the bottom end of the cloth, and tuck it behind the baby (E, F). Make sure both legs are bent up and out, so the hips can move.

For safety:

  • The baby's neck and head should be completely uncovered.
  • Tuck the blanket snugly enough that it stays in place while your baby is sleeping. There should be no loose blankets or bedding in the crib, since this increases the risk of suffocation or SIDS (also called "crib death").
  • Make sure that there is room for the baby to bend their hips or knees. When babies are swaddled too tightly, it can cause problems in the hip joint.
  • Always put your baby to sleep on their back.
  • Do not place a loose blanket or anything else on top of your baby after swaddling.
  • Do not swaddle your baby once they start trying to roll over.
