The effect of changing inspiratory flow rate on rate of inspiratory work of breathing during controlled mechanical ventilation (circles) and assist-control ventilation (squares). At all flow rates, the work of breathing was significantly greater during assist-control ventilation versus controlled ventilation. During both modes of mechanical ventilation, work increased as flow rate was decreased. Values are mean ± SE.
