Severity-of-illness score for children with chronic interstitial lung disease (diffuse lung disease)
1. Asymptomatic
2. Symptomatic, normal room air oxygen saturation under all conditions
3. Symptomatic, normal resting room air saturation, but abnormal saturation (<90 percent) with sleep or exercise
4. Symptomatic, abnormal resting room air saturation (<90 percent)
5. Symptomatic with pulmonary hypertension

Diffuse lung disease (DLD) is traditionally known as interstitial lung disease (ILD). Because many of these disorders are associated with extensive alteration of alveolar and airway architecture, in addition to changes in the interstitial compartment, we prefer the term DLD rather than ILD.
