Benefit of recombinant TPO to murine transplant donors

Mice were treated with lethal irradiation followed by the transplantation of 1 x 10⁵ bone marrow cells and the recovery of the blood counts followed. Top panel: The administration of various doses of saline or thrombopoietin (TPO) after transplantation had no effect on platelet recovery. Bottom panel: Accelerated platelet recovery occurred when mice were transplanted with bone marrow from TPO-treated donors; the response was similar in recipients treated after transplantation with saline or TPO. Recipients of marrow from TPO-treated donors also had accelerated recovery of the red cell counts (not shown).
