ANSWER —

Incorrect.

Lifestyle change to achieve weight loss, including medical nutrition therapy and exercise, is a cost-effective component of the treatment of type 2 diabetes at the time of diagnosis and subsequently [1]. Health care professionals (including clinicians, nurses, and registered dietitians) should promote this approach. However, in most instances, lifestyle interventions alone do not achieve or maintain weight loss and metabolic targets. Metformin should usually be initiated at the time of diagnosis. (See "Initial management of hyperglycemia in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus" and "Medical nutrition therapy for type 2 diabetes mellitus" and "Exercise guidance in adults with diabetes mellitus".)

Return to the beginning to try again. (See "Interactive diabetes case 17: A 47-year-old patient with newly discovered type 2 diabetes".)
