How to use an external (male) condom

How to use an external (male) condom
To use an external (male) condom:
  1. Remove the condom from its packaging. Be careful not to damage the condom with your fingernails, teeth, or other sharp objects.
  2. Place the condom on the tip of your erect penis. If you are not circumcised, pull back your foreskin first. You should be able to see the rolled side on the outside. If you put on the condom inside out, throw it away. Since it already touched your penis, using the same condom increases the risk of spreading sexually transmitted infections ("STIs") to your partner.
  3. Pinch the tip of the condom to remove any air. Then, roll it down to the base of your penis. Make sure your partner has enough lubrication to prevent the condom from breaking. You can use condom-compatible lubricants to help. If the condom breaks or slips off, put on a new one.
  4. Keep the condom on until you are done with the sex act (vaginal, anal, or oral sex). Immediately after, hold the condom firmly against the base of your penis. Then, withdraw your penis from your partner. Holding the condom prevents it from slipping or leaking.
  5. Take off the condom. If the condom slipped, broke, or leaked:
    • Tell your doctor or nurse you might have been exposed to STIs.
    • If your partner could get pregnant, they should use emergency contraception to prevent this.
  6. Wrap the condom in tissue, and throw it away.
