The rate of increase in the ratio of the fractional alveolar concentration of anesthetic (FA) to the fractional concentration of inspired anesthetic (FI) is determined by the amount of the anesthetic that is delivered to the lungs and the amount that is removed from the lungs by the blood. During induction, the lower the solubility of the inhaled anesthetic, the faster the rise in alveolar concentration.
