Vulvovaginal candidiasis: Treatment of confirmed Candida glabrata infection

Vulvovaginal candidiasis: Treatment of confirmed Candida glabrata infection
Candida glabrata is a common vaginal colonizer. It has low virulence and rarely causes symptoms. All other potential causes of symptoms should be excluded prior to treating C. glabrata.
  • If treatment is elected, non-azole drugs are required because C. glabrata does not respond to typical first-line azole therapy.
  • This management plan is based on the limited available data and our clinical experience.

BV: bacterial vaginosis; VVC: vulvovaginal candidiasis.

* Discussion of testing options to confirm VVC and/or other causes of symptoms are presented in related UpToDate content on abnormal vaginal discharge.

¶ Boric acid vaginal suppositories are delivered in clear capsules and are only to be used vaginally. Oral consumption of boric acid can result in death.
