Initial management of oral lichen planus in adults

Initial management of oral lichen planus in adults
Oral lichen planus is associated with risk for oral SCC. Clinical follow-up should include an oral examination for signs of oral SCC. Topical therapy (eg, topical corticosteroids or tacrolimus) is typically continued as an adjunct to systemic therapy.

SCC: squamous cell carcinoma.

* Refer to UpToDate content for details on triggers (eg, irritants, smoking, certain foods, stress) and oral hygiene measures (eg, minimize trauma and irritants, attend professional dental cleanings every 3 to 4 months).

¶ A response to topical tacrolimus is expected within 2 months. A response to intralesional corticosteroids is expected within 2 or 3 treatments separated by 2 to 4 weeks.

Δ Refer to additional UpToDate algorithm on the approach to systemic therapy for oral lichen planus refractory to local therapy for details on the selection of systemic therapy.
