Estimated likelihood that detection of Shiga toxin (in absence of genotype information) reflects high-risk STEC infection

Estimated likelihood that detection of Shiga toxin (in absence of genotype information) reflects high-risk STEC infection
Is stool bloody? Is E. coli O157:H7 excluded? Estimated likelihood of high-risk STEC
Yes No 87%
No No 42%
Yes Yes 40%
No Yes 20%
These estimates are based on data from stool testing among 72 children with diarrhea positive for STEC[1]. The likelihood of high-risk STEC (defined as ability to produce Shiga toxin 2) was calculated based on presence or absence of bloody diarrhea and whether E. coli O157:H7 was excluded.
E.coli: Escherichia coli; STEC: Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli.
