Initial treatment of localized Ewing sarcoma

Initial treatment of localized Ewing sarcoma
Localized Ewing sarcoma is confined to the site where it originated and may include nearby structures, but has no evidence of metastatic disease. All patients should be evaluated for multimodality therapy (chemotherapy plus surgery and/or radiation) as this has been shown to improve overall survival. VDC/IE is preferred to be given every 14 days with growth factor support.

RT: radiation therapy; VDC/IE: vincristine, doxorubicin, and cyclophosphamide alternating with ifosfamide and etoposide.

* A minority of patients will progress during initial neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Treatment of such patients is individualized, and usually incorporates a different chemotherapy regimen.
