Acute external otitis |
Use sufficient medication to fill the entire ear canal, typically 4 to 6 drops for an adult ear. |
Following instillation of ear drops, patients should lie on their (opposite) side for 3 to 5 minutes or place a cotton ball in the ear canal for 20 minutes. |
Protect the ear from water. |
In-ear devices (eg, hearing aids, headphone "ear buds") should not be worn until clinical resolution and should be disinfected prior to reuse. |
Prevention of external otitis recurrence |
Fingers, towels, cotton swabs, or other foreign objects should not be inserted into the canal. |
For those who engage in water sports, the use of ear plugs and thorough ear drying is encouraged. |
Hearing aids should be removed nightly and cleaned regularly. |
