an epidural injection, the doctor inserts a needle between 2 of the bones that
make up the spine. Then, they inject medicines into the area around the spinal
cord. This is an illustration of a "lumbar" epidural injection, which is given into the low back. The doctor can place the needle in other areas to treat other types of pain.
