Gene expression (transcription and translation)

Gene expression (transcription and translation)
Gene expression requires transcription and translation:
  • Transcription of DNA to produce mRNA occurs in the cell nucleus; the resulting mRNA is translocated into the cytoplasm via the nuclear pores.
  • Translation of mRNA into protein occurs in the cell cytoplasm; this is followed by post-translational processing.

Refer to UpToDate for additional details of gene expression and DNA regulation.

DNA: deoxyribonucleic acid; RNA: ribonucleic acid; mRNA: messenger RNA; tRNA: transfer RNA.
