Management of porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT)

Refer to UpToDate for details of PCT diagnosis and treatment as well as assessment and treatment of iron overload.

• Skin protection from sun until lesions resolve.
• Pain control and infection prevention as needed.
• Counseling to avoid precipitating factors (smoking, alcohol, exogenous estrogens, supplemental iron).
• Consultation with an expert in cutaneous porphyrias.
• Opportunity for at-risk relatives to have genetic testing of UROD and/or HFE and to receive counseling as needed.
