Evaluation of a patient with suspected IgA vasculitis

Evaluation of a patient with suspected IgA vasculitis

IgA: immunoglobulin A.

* Kidney disease is defined as proteinuria with protein-to-creatinine ratio ≥0.2 and/or hematuria.

¶ No further confirmatory testing needed, but additional testing may be performed to guide management.

Δ A skin biopsy is not necessary to confirm the diagnosis if there is a classic rash. However, if the patient has features atypical for IgA vasculitis, then a skin biopsy can help confirm the diagnosis and guide treatment decisions. In addition, patients who are stable and require only conservative/symptomatic therapy typically do not need biopsies, but biopsies can be obtained if the patient is worsening or not improving.

◊ Severe abdominal pain is defined as pain that interferes with the ability to eat, drink, sleep, or do other normal activities and may require hospitalization.
