Accessing a port

Accessing a port
A port is a small "reservoir" attached to a thin, flexible tube called a "catheter." Both the reservoir and the catheter are under the skin. The catheter goes into a large blood vessel that leads to the heart. The reservoir is covered with a special silicone, which allows the port to be accessed many times. A special kind of needle is placed through the skin and into the reservoir to access the port.
