Determining the need for preoperative chest x-ray (CXR) before non-cardiothoracic surgery in adults

Determining the need for preoperative chest x-ray (CXR) before non-cardiothoracic surgery in adults
Routine preoperative CXR is not warranted for the majority of patients undergoing non-cardiothoracic surgery because the results rarely influence management. Exceptions include patients whose history and/or physical examination suggest new or unstable cardiopulmonary disease.
* In addition to CXR, further evaluation to determine the etiology of symptoms is warranted and may include electrocardiography, pulmonary function testing, echocardiography, and/or cardiac stress testing. Please refer to UpToDate content on the evaluation of patients with chest pain, shortness of breath, wheezing, edema, new heart murmurs, and dysrhythmias.
