When evaluating the stable patient for respiratory distress, ventilator mechanics should be taken into consideration together with clinical assessment and bedside imaging and laboratory studies.

Ppeak: peak airway pressure; VT: tidal volume; Pplat: plateau pressure; delta Ppeak − Pplat: difference between Ppeak and Pplat; ETT: endotracheal tube; ARDS: acute respiratory distress syndrome; Auto-PEEP: auto positive end-expiratory pressure; HME: heat moisture exchanger.
