Accumulated tissue iron stores in simple versus exchange transfusion

Accumulated tissue iron stores in simple versus exchange transfusion
Change in ferritin levels over time in 83 children who participated in the SIT trial and were assigned to receive transfusions for 1 year. In the patients receiving automated red cell exchange (red squares), ferritin values did not increase above 500 ng/mL. In contrast, those who received manual exchange or simple transfusion had progressive increases in serum ferritin.
AET: automated red blood cell exchange; SIT: Silent Cerebral Infarct Multi Center Clinical Trial; RBC: red blood cell.
From: Kelly S, Rodeghier M, DeBaun MR.
