Notes
  • In the setting of hypoalbuminemia or hyperalbuminemia, most experts measure the serum ionized calcium. If a laboratory known to measure ionized calcium reliably is not available, the total calcium should be corrected for any abnormality in serum albumin using a calcium correction formula. The accuracy of the corrected calcium is poor in a variety of populations, including patients hospitalized with critical illness and patients with advanced-stage chronic kidney disease.
  • For more information on estimating serum calcium concentration in the presence of abnormal levels of albumin, please refer to UpToDate topic reviews on hyper- and hypocalcemia in adults and children.
  • Some practitioners prefer 4.0 g/dL and others 4.4 g/dL as the Normal albumin.[1]
  • Mean albumin concentration is lower than 4 g/dL in infants and children age <1 year.[2]
  • * This calculator uses conventional units (also known as US units and gravimetric units) as the default for inputs. Do not use this calculator if you are using SI units (Système international d'unités); please refer instead to the SI units version of this calculator.

Equations used

Calcium = Serum_calcium + 0.8 * (Normal_albumin - Patient_albumin)

Only digits 0 to 9 and a single decimal point (".") are acceptable as numeric inputs. Attempted input of other characters into a numeric field may lead to an incorrect result.
