Optimizing the angle of incidence and visualization of the lung in sagittal view with lateral tilt of the ultrasound transducer

The panel on the left shows different placements and orientations of the ultrasound transducer during thoracic paravertebral block, corresponding with the images on the right.

With the transducer placed laterally, the pleura is well visualized.
With the transducer placed more medially and with the same angle with respect to the skin, the pleura is not seen.
With the transducer placed medially but tilted laterally to optimize the angle of incidence, the pleura is well visualized.
