Skin closure with sterile adhesive tapes

Skin closure with sterile adhesive tapes

Placement of sterile adhesive tapes involves the following steps:
(A) Ensure the wound is properly prepared for closure including debridement, as needed, and irrigation. Clean and dry the skin at least 5 cm (2 inches) around the wound. If desired, apply tincture of benzoin (or similar adhesive substance) to intact skin on both sides of the wound.
(B) Apply the first adhesive tape strip to one side of the skin in the middle of the wound.
(C) With fingers or forceps, approximate the wound edges and firmly press the free side of the strip in place on the other side of the wound. Do not stretch the tape across the wound.
(D) Apply additional strips in similar fashion with even spacing (approximately 0.3 cm [1/8 inch] between each strip until the wound is completely approximated.
(E; optional) Apply anchor strips parallel to both sides of the wound about 1 to 1.2 cm (1/2 inch) from the margin to prevent premature loss of strips and to decrease tension.
