Appearance of a nipple that was compressed during breastfeeding

Appearance of a nipple that was compressed during breastfeeding
  • Healthy nipple after breastfeeding – The nipple shape appears normal and full, with no evidence of abrasion or nipple compression.
  • Compressed nipple after breastfeeding – The nipple may be sloped or evenly compressed, and there may be a blanched (white) compression stripe. These are signs that the nipple was compressed by the infant's tongue during the feed, suggesting an ineffective latch, and are usually accompanied by nipple pain. Repositioning the infant every time the feeding is painful (with the nipple closer to the infant's nose and the infant's lower jaw further away from the nipple) will relieve the compression and avoid further nipple trauma.
