Chest radiographs of meconium aspiration syndrome

Chest radiographs of meconium aspiration syndrome
Composite of three chest radiographs demonstrating progressive changes over the course of disease in patients with meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS).
(A) Initial chest radiograph on the first day of life in a newborn (born at 41 weeks gestational age [GA]) intubated for respiratory distress and suspected meconium aspiration. Lungs show diffuse interstitial opacities with pleural effusions, a nonspecific pattern on radiography.
(B) Chest radiograph in a newborn (born at 40 weeks GA) at 5 days of age. The lungs are hyperinflated with flattened diaphragms and streaky bands of atelectasis.
(C) Chest radiograph in the same neonate as (A) at 10 days of age. In this infant with severe disease, the lungs are more diffusely opacified, obscuring the cardiac silhouette.
