Complicated febrile episode in a child with non-chemotherapy-induced neutropenia is defined by one or more of the following associated findings:

Hemodynamic instability

Gastrointestinal symptoms:
- Abdominal pain
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea

New-onset neurologic signs or mental status changes

Intravascular catheter infection (especially catheter tunnel infection)

Underlying chronic lung disease

New pulmonary infiltrate or hypoxemia

Skin or soft tissue infection at any site

Sinus tenderness or other findings of upper respiratory tract infection
