Initial evaluation of adults and adolescents with polyuria and a normal serum sodium: Confirming the presence of polyuria and determining the type of diuresis
Arginine vasopressin resistance was previously called nephrogenic diabetes insipidus; arginine vasopressin deficiency was previously called central diabetes insipidus.

* Measuring urine osmolality in the 24-hour urine specimen is necessary to determine if a solute (osmotic) diuresis is present. Measuring urine creatinine will help determine the completeness of the urine collection. The values of 24-hour urine sodium, potassium, chloride, urea nitrogen, and glucose will help determine the cause of solute diuresis, if present. If a 24-hour urine collection is not required to confirm the presence of polyuria, spot urine measurements of sodium, potassium, chloride, urea nitrogen, and glucose can be used. Refer to the UpToDate topics on evaluation of polyuria for details.

¶ The cause of the solute diuresis is typically clear from the history and from the findings of the 24-hour urine specimen. Refer to the UpToDate topics on evaluation of polyuria for details.
