In addition to the vaccines above, patients with impaired splenic function should also receive all routinely recommended age-appropriate vaccines (including COVID-19 vaccination). For patients undergoing elective splenectomy, vaccinations should ideally be started approximately 10 to 12 weeks prior to surgery so that the recommended vaccine series can be completed at least 14 days prior to splenectomy. For patients undergoing emergency splenectomy, vaccine series should be started 14 days after splenectomy. For patients with nonsurgical asplenia or hyposplenism, vaccinations should be given as soon as impaired splenic function is recognized.
