Gazelle Hb Variant test for diagnosing sickle cell disease, sickle cell trait, or Hb SC disease

Gazelle Hb Variant test for diagnosing sickle cell disease, sickle cell trait, or Hb SC disease
The Gazelle Hb Variant (previously, HemeChip) test is a microchip electrophoresis device that can identify Hb variants from using point-of-care electrophoresis on a fingerstick or heelprick blood sample. Similar to standard electrophoresis, different Hbs migrate differently along the test strip paper due to differences in charge.
(A) Cartridge.
(B, C) Hb migration patterns (schematic). Hbs illustrated here (from right to left) include normal adult hemoglobin (Hb A), fetal hemoglobin (Hb F), sickle hemoglobin (Hb S), and hemoglobin C (Hb C; comigrates with Hb A2). Analysis of the combination of Hbs identified facilitates diagnosis of sickle cell disease, sickle cell trait, and hemoglobin SC disease.[1,2]
(D) Portable, battery-powered electrophoresis device.
Hb: hemoglobin.
