Physiologic effects of ghrelin

Physiologic effects of ghrelin
Circulating ghrelin concentrations are highest during periods of fasting. Ghrelin's physiologic effects have been determined by intravenous administration of the hormone to achieve normal systemic serum concentrations or by blocking ghrelin's effects in vivo. Tissue-specific effects have also been confirmed by application of ghrelin in vitro.
ACTH: corticotropin; SNS: sympathetic nervous system; BAT: brown adipose tissue; IGF-1: insulin-like growth factor-1.
