The Pediatric Anesthesia Emergence Delirium (PAED) scale
Criteria Score
  1. The child makes eye contact with the caregiver/parent
4 = not at all; to 0 = extremely
  1. The child's actions are purposeful
4 = not at all; to 0 = extremely
  1. The child is aware of his/her surroundings
4 = not at all; to 0 = extremely
  1. The child is restless
0 = not at all; to 4 = extremely
  1. The child is inconsolable
0 = not at all; to 4 = extremely
The scores for each of the five listed behaviors are added to achieve a total scale score. A score of ≥10 makes it highly likely that a child has emergence delirium. For further information, refer to UpToDate content on emergence delirium and agitation in children.
