Baseline studies in children receiving chelation for lead poisoning
  • Abdominal radiograph for leaded foreign bodies or flecks in the GI tract
  • Free erythrocyte protoporphyrin (if not already obtained)
  • Serum electrolytes
  • Blood urea nitrogen
  • Serum creatinine
  • Serum calcium
  • Serum magnesium
  • Serum aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase
  • Urinalysis
  • Neuroimaging (eg, computed tomography of the brain) in patients with encephalopathy
  • Screening for G6PD deficiency (eg, fluorescent spot test or methemoglobin reduction test)*
GI: gastrointestinal; G6PD: glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase.
* Indicated for patients of an ethnicity with high prevalence for the disease (eg, African-American or Mediterranean descent) who are receiving dimercaprol. However, chelation should not be delayed while awaiting results.
