Anastomotic ulceration of the small bowel in a child with short bowel syndrome

Multifocal superficial anastomotic ulcerations in the small bowel of a 4-year-old female with short bowel syndrome due to necrotizing enterocolitis. The patient has a history of ileal resection and ileocolonic anastomosis. Her clinical course was complicated by anemia requiring blood transfusion due to anastomotic ulceration and gastrointestinal bleeding. She failed medical therapy (antibiotics, antiinflammatories, and steroids) and ultimately required surgical resection of the affected bowel.
