Injured toenail ("black toe") in a runner

Runners sometimes sustain toenail injuries from repetitive trauma to the nail or nail bed. This condition is commonly called "jogger's toenail", and it most frequently affects the great toe (photo above), which may appear black from subungual bleeding.
