Photodamage creates changes within the skin layers known as solar elastosis. This presents as fragmentation of collagen and elastin fibers, decreases in the extracellular matrix (ECM) ground substance, as well as hyaluronic acid decrease in the thinning epidermis. Traditional immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining has failed to differentiate degenerated elastin from new elastin fibers generated with various topical strategies.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a main cause of aging of sun-exposed skin, but greater attention is being focused on the damaging effects of high-energy visible (HEV) light (400 and 500 nm). HEV light exposure has increased with expanding use of consumer electronics, such as smartphones, which have a peak emission in the 400-490 nm range. Sunscreens containing titanium dioxide and zinc oxide protect against UVA and UVB radiation but provide limited protection against HEV light.

The use of antioxidants in applications for topical use seems promising, however, many studies must be performed to ensure processes and products that can effectively bring benefits to combat the action of free radicals in the skin. For topical antioxidants to be effective against free radicals from the skin, it is essential that the antioxidants compounds permeate the different skin layers, to reach deeper layers of the epidermis in active form and stay there for a sufficient time to cause the beneficial effects.
