The emerging role of extracellular vesicles in the testis

Yi Ma, Qin-Wen Ma, Yun Sun, Xiang-Feng Chen

doi : 10.1093/humrep/dead015

Human Reproduction, Volume 38, Issue 3, March 2023, Pages 334–351

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are nano-sized membrane-bounded particles, released by all cells and capable of transporting bioactive cargoes, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids, to regulate a variety of biological functions. Seminal plasma is enriched in EVs, and extensive evidence has revealed the role of EVs (e.g. prostasomes and epididymosomes) in the male genital tract.

Childhood cancer and hematological disorders negatively affect spermatogonial quantity at diagnosis: a retrospective study of a male fertility preservation cohort

Ieva Masliukaite, Elissavet Ntemou, Elizabeth A M Feijen, Marianne van de Wetering, Andreas Meissner, Alexandre T Soufan, Sjoerd Repping, Leontien M C Kremer, Kirsi Jahnukainen, Ellen Goossens, Ans M M van Pelt

doi : 10.1093/humrep/dead004

Human Reproduction, Volume 38, Issue 3, March 2023, Pages 359–370

Fertility preservation in pediatric male patients is considered based on the gonadotoxicity of selected treatments. Although treatment effects on germ cells have been extensively investigated, limited data are available on the effect of the disease on the prepubertal male gonad. Of the few studies investigating the effects of cancer or hematologic disorders on testicular function and germ cell quantity in prepuberty, the results are inconsistent.

Condensation and protamination of sperm chromatin affect ICSI outcomes when gametes from healthy individuals are used

Jordi Ribas-Maynou, Sergi Novo, Albert Salas-Huetos, Sergi Rovira, Marta Antich, Marc Yeste

doi : 10.1093/humrep/deac261

Human Reproduction, Volume 38, Issue 3, March 2023, Pages 371–386

Previous data on how sperm chromatin damage affects ICSI outcomes are inconsistent. Revealing which sperm factors influence embryo development is necessary to understand the male contribution to ICSI success and to develop novel sperm selection techniques or male-based treatments.

Maternal age affects pronuclear and chromatin dynamics, morula compaction and cell polarity, and blastulation of human embryos

Kenji Ezoe, Tetsuya Miki, Hikari Akaike, Kiyoe Shimazaki, Tsubasa Takahashi, Yuko Tanimura, Ayumi Amagai, Ayano Sawado, Mai Mogi, Shigeru Kaneko, Satoshi Ueno, Giovanni Coticchio, Danilo Cimadomo, Andrea Borini, Laura Rienzi, Keiichi Kato

doi : 10.1093/humrep/dead001

Human Reproduction, Volume 38, Issue 3, March 2023, Pages 387–399

In ART, advanced maternal age (AMA) affects oocyte yield, fertilization, and overall developmental competence. However, with the exception of chromosome segregation errors occurring during oocyte meiosis, the molecular and biochemical mechanisms responsible for AMA-related subfertility and reduced embryo developmental competence remain unclear

Sperm cryopreservation does not affect live birth rate in normozoospermic men: analysis of 7969 oocyte donation cycles

M Torra-Massana, R Vassena, A Rodríguez

doi : 10.1093/humrep/dead005

Human Reproduction, Volume 38, Issue 3, March 2023, Pages 400–407

Sperm cryopreservation by slow freezing is a common practice in ART. While frozen-thawed semen typically presents reduced motility and vitality, its use for ICSI is generally considered adequate in terms of reproductive outcomes.
